Presidents Report - Budgie News January 2012
Late November I received a Christmas card (blank) together with a letter criticising the BCV and some of its members. There was a request to publish in the next issue of Budgie news. This cannot be done as the author did not state their name. However, I would like to comment on some of the issues raised such as cost of birds, show cages, breeding cages and equipment, additional varieties and decline in our membership.
Show cages
The cost of show cages (complete) is $40.00, however, it is possible to buy kits to assemble yourself – most people are handy enough to assemble and paint themselves.
Breeding cages and equipment
Some breeders have very elaborate establishments, however, there is somewhere in between. I remember when I was in my early teens (a long time ago) I bred budgies in wooden Banana boxes with wire fronts on them with basic feed and water containers. Some breeders spend a considerable amount of money on extras other than necessities. The most successful breeder in the 1980’s (The late Jack Watts) fed the basic seed and water with silverbeat every 2 days.
The cost of birds
The cost of birds and setting up a small breeding team is always an issue with the newcomers joining the fancy. I would suggest that they begin with the cheaper options when choosing birds. Newcomers only need some basic stock when getting started. As an example, one of our recent National winners and several shield winners, have been birds from the $20-$30 range (a bit of luck).
Additional classes
The possibility of introducing additional classes could enhance the chance of more exhibitors specializing in these varieties adding to their show team.
Membership
In relation to our membership the Promotions Working Team has been very successful in promoting our fancy. Their work includes promoting our hobby via newspaper, bird magazines, media and other areas such as car stickers (which will be available to all members with this issue of Budgie News). The committee is to be commended on their wonderful efforts. New members require assistance from the more experienced members. The introduction of a ‘buddy’ system would be appropriate and beneficial.
In conclusion the ‘phantom letter’ author or authors should have approached the BCV in an appropriate manner. BCV councillors are always happy to speak to our member about any queries at anytime. Personally, I believe our hobby is in good shape with our members experiencing enjoyment and success out of breeding and exhibiting our feathered friends. I wish all of our members and their families a happy and prosperous New Year.

Note:
Show cages will be for sale after the National Competition in Geelong May 2012. $37.00 each.
Contact Phil Hoadley to arrange payment and pick up Sunday afternoon after the completion of the show.
